The clothing worn by soldiers in World War I marked the transition from colorful nineteenth-century uniforms to functional camouflage uniforms (gray-green, khaki, or blue) designed to blend into the surroundings. Standard equipment included wool jackets and trousers, metal helmets (such as the French Adrian helmet supplied to Italy), puttees, hobnailed boots, and gas masks.
